VIENNESE MATINÉE – Domus & Hortus artis 2026

Franz Schubert's Notturno in G major, D. 96 is a charming chamber arrangement of a work originally composed by the Czech composer Wenzel Thomas Matiegka. Schubert adapted and expanded Matiegka's original Notturno, Op. 21 from 1807, arranging it for a quartet of flute, viola, cello and guitar. Matiegka had originally composed Notturno, Op. 21 as a trio for flute, viola and guitar. Schubert – who was known for his fondness for the guitar – was captivated by the piece and decided to expand its scoring. He took Matiegka's original three-voice arrangement and added an independent cello part. This version is well known among specialists today and is available, for example, in the MUSICA RARA edition published by Breitkopf & Härtel… The piece Canzonetta Italiana (in full, Introduction et Variations concertants pour Violoncelle & Guitare) by the Italian composer and virtuoso Luigi Legnani was originally written for cello and guitar, and was later partly adapted for other scorings (e.g. using viola) by enthusiasts and performers. For a long time it was believed to be a work by J. K. Mertz. It was only in 2012 that the guitarist and musicologist Stefan Hackl discovered the original mid-19th-century manuscript in a private collection in Austria.
