IN HOPE – Domus & Hortus artis 2026

While Lyatoshynsky's early work was influenced by late Romanticism and later by Scriabinesque expressionism and modernism, in the 1940s, under pressure from the regime and wartime events, he returned to a more transparent texture and national motifs. String Quartet No. 4 in D minor, op. 43 is, however, no ordinary arrangement of folk songs. The composer deconstructs and reharmonizes folk melodies through his complex, chromatic and polyphonic musical language. The result is a profound chamber work with a layered structure and high performance demands*. Second String Quartet in A major, op. 68* was composed by Dmitri Shostakovich in September 1944. He wrote the work in a record 19 days during his stay in the town of Ivanovo, northeast of Moscow. The quartet was written toward the end of the Second World War. Although victory over Nazi Germany was already certain at that time, the atmosphere in the country was still marked by enormous losses and tragedies. The work is dedicated to the composer's close friend, the composer Vissarion Shebalin. It also strongly reflects the favourite music of his late friend and critic Ivan Sollertinsky, and carries elements inspired by Russian folk music and Jewish motifs.
