SUMMER MUSIC - Domus & Hortus artis 2026

While clarinet quartets of the 18th century usually consisted of a single clarinet instrument combined with three string instruments, modern clarinet quartets (which typically use four B-flat clarinets or a combination of B-flat, E-flat and bass clarinets) have their origins in the predecessors of the wind bands of that era. The pioneer of these ensembles was the clarinet choir, founded in Belgium at the end of the 19th century by Gustave Poncelet. During this period, the English bandmaster James Waterson also began composing technically demanding quartets for four B-flat clarinets. In the 1950s and 1960s, ensembles consisting entirely of clarinets experienced a huge boom as a formal basis for the classical and academic chamber genre. Nowadays, quartets made up entirely of clarinets and choir-like ensembles of this type regularly perform not only modern avant-garde works, but also transcriptions of classical titles.
