DIVERTISSEMENT POUR CHALUMEAUX & CLARINETTES - Domus & Hortus artis 2026
Where:Albrecht House
Baroque composers, such as Antonio Vivaldi, Christoph Graupner, and Georg Philipp Telemann, often used the chalumeau for programmatic and atmospheric purposes. Thanks to its dark, yet gentle resonance, this instrument was ideal for depicting nature, tender emotional moments, or pastoral scenes in operas and oratorios. Thanks to its agility and vocal expressiveness, the chalumeau allowed performers, for example, to imitate bird calls. Vivaldi enhanced the atmosphere of the aria Veni, veni, me sequera fida (in Juditha triumphans) with a soprano chalumeau, and using the color and diction of this instrument, he directly captured the bird's voice. The instrument was also extremely popular in the Habsburg imperial court orchestra and is scored in nearly four dozen operas from its repertoire; in chamber music, it appeared in the first decade of the 18th century in duets published in Amsterdam.
