AGE MEETS ERA – Domus & Hortus artis 2026

Although the roots of “close harmony” reach back to the 19th century and to African-American barbershop and gospel singing, it was only in the late 1920s that this style was adopted by all-female ensembles and began to be used in popular music. The Boswell Sisters (Martha, Connee and Vet), from New Orleans, are generally regarded as the pioneers of women's vocal groups singing in “close harmony”. They emerged in 1925 and had achieved nationwide recognition by 1930. They brought with them complex, syncopated jazz harmonies and scat singing that revolutionized vocal arrangements. The concept of close vocal harmony (usually for three to four female voices) began to spread from the USA to Europe, largely thanks to American pioneers such as The Boswell Sisters and The Andrews Sisters. During this period the first European formations emerged, such as the Austrian group Viennese Singing Sisters (active from the turn of the 1920s into the 1930s). Among the first and most significant women's vocal groups singing in the close harmony style in the Czechoslovak context were, above all, Sestry Allanovy (also known as Allanovy sestry) and Tri dievčatká. Sestry Allanovy were formed in Prague in 1940 and became the most popular girl trio of the 1940s. Their model was American groups. They originally performed under the name Tři pražská děvčátka and appeared alongside such greats as Karel Vlach and R. A. Dvorský.
